Awesome Children’s Books About Braces

Nowadays, there is a children’s book that can broach any topic a kid might face in their lifetime. For kids who either might have just gotten braces or are still trying to figure out how to navigate this new world, there’s a book addressing their questions, worries, and experiences. No matter the age or reading level, here are some great books that can help navigate your child through this important and sometimes challenging time in their life.

Brace Yourself

Brace Yourself, written by a mother-daughter duo, follows a precocious 8-year-old’s journey from first starting treatment to living with braces. For fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, this book is filled with humor, doodles, and honest accounts of what your child can expect when getting braces. This book is perfect for kids between seven and nine years of age.

Smile

From a New York Time’s best-selling author, Smile is a down-to-earth and hilarious graphic novel about a middle schooler dealing with friends, family, and dental drama. The book gives an honest look at one middle school girl’s smile story, which prepares your 8 to 12-year-old kid for the ups and downs of braces, as well as other orthodontic gear. While there are several more books in this series that middle grade readers would love, start with this first book where Raina begins her orthodontic journey.

Suzy’s Smile: Suzy Dogfish Gets Braces

Suzy the shark is a lovable, strictly vegetarian shark raised by a loving family of dogfish. One day, her parents notice her teeth are starting to grow in crooked. They take Suzy to Dr. Manta Ray, the ocean’s best orthodontist, who teaches Suzy how to care for her smile. This colorfully illustrated story also includes fun activities for early readers ages five to seven!

Emma Gets Braces

For little readers, ages five or six, this book of fun rhymes goes through everything a kid can expect at the orthodontist one letter of the alphabet at a time. You’ll have your child reading along with you in no time with this charming, educational book that teaches kids both about braces and learning their ABCs.

The Braces Journal

For 12 to 13-year-olds, this book is perfect for creative kids. The Braces Journal includes fun and thoughtful prompts to get kids to write about their orthodontist visits, how often they are brushing, and their feelings about having braces. Also included are fun facts sprinkled throughout the pages, helpful lists such as foods kids must avoid, and troubleshooting tips from common questions kids ask. This book also makes a great keepsake with pockets to put before and after photos so kids can track their progress from their very first visit to the day they get their braces off.

No matter your child’s age, there are plenty of books that can help ease their worries about getting, and living with, braces. It’s never too early to start talking to your child about braces. For so many kids, reading books is how they can better understand their world and their own experiences, and books about braces can prepare kids for this very normal part of growing up with a healthy smile.
