Getting Started with Invisalign
Starting Invisalign treatment is simple, but following the steps correctly ensures the best results. Here’s a clear, step-by-step guide:
1. Your First Appointment
- Dr. Milnor will place attachments (small tooth-colored bumps) on select teeth to help the aligners grip and move your teeth effectively.
- You’ll receive your first set of aligners and instructions on daily wear time (generally 20–22 hours per day).
- The team will demonstrate how to insert and remove your aligners safely.
2. Wearing and Switching Aligners
- Wear each aligner set for 1 week, or as directed by Dr. Milnor.
- Always remove aligners when eating or drinking anything other than water.
- Keep aligners in a protective case when not in your mouth.
3. Managing Discomfort
- Mild pressure or soreness is normal, especially when switching to a new aligner.
- Use over-the-counter pain relief if needed.
- “Chewies” (soft cylindrical aids) help seat your aligners snugly for optimal results.
4. Cleaning Your Aligners
- Rinse aligners with lukewarm water (never hot).
- Brush aligners gently with a soft toothbrush, no toothpaste needed, as it can scratch the plastic.
- Consider using Invisalign cleaning crystals for a deeper clean.
5. Maintaining Your Teeth and Aligners
- Brush and floss after every meal before putting the aligners back in.
- Regularly check for cracks or damage to your aligners and notify our office if replacement is needed.
- Attend all scheduled appointments (in-office or virtual through Dental Monitoring) to ensure progress stays on track.
