Clear aligners get marketed as a fit for almost anyone, which is not quite true. Here is what actually determines whether aligners will work for a given bite, not just what the ads imply.
What aligners handle well
Clear aligners are strong at correcting mild to moderate crowding, spacing, and many bite issues in patients with reasonably healthy gums and a full set of permanent teeth. They also tend to suit patients who travel often or play contact sports, since the trays come out for games and practice (AAO on clear aligners).
Where aligners run into limits
Severe rotations, significant bite discrepancies, and some tooth-movement patterns respond more predictably to fixed appliances, at least for part of treatment. This does not make aligners the wrong choice across the board, but it does mean a case that looks simple on an at-home impression kit can be more complex once we take actual scans and X-rays.
Compliance is the real variable
Aligners only move teeth while they are in the mouth, generally 20 to 22 hours a day. A patient who is inconsistent with wear will see treatment stall or extend regardless of how good the digital plan looked. How we actually decide, case by case
We take a 3D scan and evaluate bite, root position, and gum health before recommending aligners, traditional braces, or a combination. Nobody in our office quotes a treatment plan off a photo or a phone call, because the answer genuinely depends on what the scan shows.
